Coloring Geographies with Your Own Data Values

If you have data for geographies, such as ZIP codes or area codes, you can upload it to Tactician Online, and use Strategy Map to color geographies on the map according to the data values from your file.

Benefits include:

  • Use your own data for mapping and analysis.
  • Use the data that you upload to create trade areas built to threshold values.
  • Filter geographies displayed based on your own variable values.

To upload your data:

  1. From the Tactician Online home page, select My Sites and Data>Custom Data.
  2. In the Custom Data page, click Upload.
  3. In the Data File section, click Browse and select the file that you want to upload. The file must meet the file requirements listed at the bottom of the custom data page. Your file of data must contain a geographic record identifier, and at least one attribute variable.
  4. In the Type of Data to be Uploaded section, select Simple Attributes Data.
  5. Click Next.

To specify data columns:

  1. In the Manage page, you can modify the name and description of each input data column and specify how Tactician Online will interpret the value of the column. Optionally make any changes to the name and description of each variable.
  2. For each variable, use the type list to select the variable type. Note: Set the geographic identifier in your file as the Record identifier, so that Tactician Online will link the geography and your data.
  3. In the Name section, enter a name for the new custom data table that you are creating.
  4. In the Description box, enter a description of the data table. This will display in the group list of the variables dialog box.
  5. Use the Geography list to select the geography that matches the geographic identifier in the file you are importing. For example, if your file contains data at the Postal code level, and your Record Identifier is a Postal code, select Postal codes.
  6. Click Next. Tactician Online displays the import status.
  7. Click Done. Your table appears in the list of custom data tables.
  8. Return to the Tactician home page.

To map your data:

  1. Access the Wizard either by clicking Power Reports in the Tactician home page or by clicking the Return to Wizard button in the Strategy map.
  2. Use the drop-down list at the top of any tab to select the geographic level of your data. For example, if you want to map data for ZIP codes, select ZIP codes.
  3. Click the Map tab.
  4. In the Map panel, use the Thematic tab to display your data values.

Note: To access this data, the geography level of your analysis must always match the record identifier in this table. You can set the analysis level in the geographic list box at the top of the Wizard at any time in your analysis.
