Displaying Your Points on a Map
With Tactician Online's custom point display, you can place your own locations or your competitor's locations on the map, thereby getting a clear competitive picture of your market, and use that information to make better marketing decisions.
You can:
- display all of your competitor locations on one map
- display each group of competitors with its own icon, so you can easily see which competitor you are near
- turn groups of competitors on or off depending upon your analysis needs
All you need is a comma separated (csv) file with X/ Y coordinate data for each location that you want to map, and you can upload it and display the points on your Tactician Online maps.
To upload point locations:
- At the Tactician Online Home page, select My Sites and Data>Custom Data. The Manage page appears.
- Click Upload.
- Read the upload guidelines carefully and click Browse to locate a file to upload.
- Click Open.
- In the Type of Data to be uploaded section, select Custom Points. This tells Tactician Online that your file contains X,Y point coordinates for each site.
- Click Next.
To define and name your data set:
- Use the Type list to select the type for each field in the file.
- In the Name text box, type a name for the file you are importing.
- In the Description text box, type a description of the data set.
- Click Next.
- In the Description field, enter a description for the geography that Tactician Online will display when you are selecting geographies from a list.
- Click Next.
- Tactician Online displays a message indicating whether the import was successful.
- If the file does not meet the specifications, Tactician Online returns an error message identifying the problem.
- If the upload is successful, Tactician Online displays a message summarizing the upload. This includes the file name, size and number of records.
- Click Done. Your list of Uploads displays.
To map your competitors:
- Select the check box for the for the points data set that you want to map, and click Make Mappable.
- In the Mapping Details section, check Enable for mapping.
- In the Group Name box, type the group name for the data set.
- In the Overlay Name box, type the name of the overlay that will display your competitors. This name will appear in the Settings tab for your maps.
- In the list order box, type the number of the order in which this overlay will be drawn. Usually point overlays will have a list order of 1, because you want them to display on top of all other overlays.
- In the Icon Details section:
- use the list to select the icon that you want to use to display competitors, and click Use Selected Icon.
- select the Custom radio button, and click Browse to select an icon, then click Upload Icon. The Current Icon box updates to display the icon you chose.
- Use the Icon Size box to enter the size of the icon in points.
- Use the Label field to select the field that contains text that you want displayed at each competitor site.
- Click OK. Tactician Online returns to the list of sites.
To display your competitors:
- In your map, select the Settings tab.
- Click Custom Points.
- Check the box to display your competitive points.
- Click Update Map. Tactician Online updates the map to display your points.
